How to Wear a Polo Shirt
If you're a preppy at heart, you probably own at least one polo shirt. This nice, classic look is easy to wear and goes with almost anything. This can be an appropriate choice whether you are planning to play a round of golf, go to work in a casual office or spend the day shopping with friends. Read on to learn more.
Instructions
1. Pick a polo shirt that reflects your fashion sense. If you are very conservative, go for a bright pink or green.
2. Wear a black polo to turn a preppy style more modern and sophisticated.
3 . Consider polo shirts in an array of shades that compliment your coloring and your wardrobe.
4 . Look for a sleeveless polo style in a knit or silky fabric for a dressier effect.
5 . Select cap sleeves and a fitted shape for a flattering fit.
6 . Find a polo shirt that comes to the top of the hip and leave it untucked to look stylish.
7 . Pair a polo with a jean skirt or Bermuda shorts and flats for a daytime outing or very casual summer work outfit.
8 . Dress up a polo with a nice skirt and pumps.
9 . Wear a polo shirt with dress pants to the office and add a tailored blazer.
10.Try a navy and white striped polo with wide-leg pants for a nautical look.
11.Invest in a cashmere polo-style top and wear it with a long skirt for a summer cocktail party or formal dinner.
Tips & Warnings
1.Remember that not all polos are created equal. Wear ones that have a shrunken fit to look current.
2 .Look for designer polo shirts that are nice quality and will likely be in style for a long time.
3. Avoid wearing a men's cut polo shirt tightly tucked into jeans. This can make you look out of date.
How to care for your polo tshirt
How to Iron Polo Shirts
While you may consider a polo shirt casual wear requiring little care, if you take the time to iron polo shirts, your appearance while wearing them will greatly improve. Because the ribbed collar of a polo shirt tends to curl over time, iron it to keep it neat and flat. With a hot iron and a can of spray starch, you will soon have crisp and neat polo shirts to wear.
Instructions
1. Fill the iron with distilled water to the fill line.
2. Turn the iron on to a cotton/polyester setting with steam and wait while it warms.
3. Position the polo shirt over the ironing board so one half of the shirt at the top (along the shoulder to the armhole) fits along the narrow curved edge of the ironing board.
4. Iron one front half of the polo shirt from the shoulder seam down to the bottom hem. Run the iron carefully along the button opening at the front of the shirt to make sure it is crisp and wrinkle-free.
5. Move the polo shirt over to align the other half of the shirt along the other side of the narrow curved edge of the ironing board.
6. Iron the other front half of the polo shirt in the same fashion as you ironed the first half of the shirt.
7. Turn the shirt over and iron the back in the same fashion by ironing it one-half at a time and placing it along the narrow curved edge of the ironing board.
8. Position the shirt on the ironing board so the collar edge of the shirt is at the narrow end of the ironing board. Flip the collar up so it lays unfolded and flat on the ironing board.
9. Spray the entire collar area with starch, holding the can 8 to 12 inches away from the fabric.
10.Iron the collar flat with the iron until the starch dries.
11.Fold the collar over the way you will fold it to wear the shirt.
12.Iron the folded portion of the collar only. This will ensure the tips of the collar do not curl.
How to Launder Cotton Polo Shirts
Launder cotton polo shirts after wearing them. Doing so removes stains, residue and body oils from the fabric. Proper laundering not only keeps the shirts clean, but it lengthens the life span of the fabric. Improperly washing and drying cotton polo shirts can cause colors to bleed and/or fade, fabric to shrink, and stains to set.
Instructions
1.Sort laundry into like-colored and like-fabric piles. Always wash similar colors together to prevent stains from bleeding fabrics. For example, a black polo will discolor a white polo, therefore do not wash them together. Place polo shirts into the appropriate piles.
2.Apply laundry stain remover or non-bleach detergent to any stains, according to label instructions. Allow remover or detergent to soak into stains for at least one hour.
3.Add laundry detergent to the washing machine according to label instructions. Add fabric softener is you desire. Select a wash cycle. For loads containing white polo shirts, use a warm-water cycle. For dark colors, use a cold-water cycle to prevent fading. Use a cold-water cycle no matter the color of polo shirts to prevent shrinking, if necessary. Begin the wash cycle, adding clothes once the washing machine is approximately halfway filled with water.
4.Remove the clothes once the washing cycle is complete. Cotton polo shirts can either be hung on a drying rack or dried on a low-heat setting in a clothes dryer. If needed, iron the polo shirts using the cotton setting.
How to Wash Ralph Lauren Polo Shirts
Ralph Lauren polo shirts are famous for their classic style, uneven hems and embroidered pony emblems. Made of 100 percent cotton mesh, the shirts are machine washable and feature rib knit collars and cuffs that resist waving and twisting from laundering.
Instructions
1.Start the clothes washer, adding laundry detergent, fabric softener, laundry booster or other products as directed for your model of machine.
2. Put the polo shirt in the washer along with other clothing of similar color and weight. Make sure each load of laundry contains items that require similar care, such as water temperature, length of cycle and speed of agitation. Set the washer to a cool water cycle and start the machine.
3. Remove the laundry from the washer at the end of the cycle. Place it in the dryer, adding a fabric softener sheet if you didn't use liquid softener in the washer. Clean the lint screen to improve air flow and dryer efficiency.
4. Set the dryer to low heat to help prevent shrinkage, a common problem with cotton clothing. Turn on the dryer.
5. Remove the clothing immediately when the dryer finishes its cycle. Hang the polo shirt on a hanger to prevent wrinkles. If necessary, touch up wrinkles with an iron or steamer.
Tips & Warnings
Consider hanging your polo shirt to dry instead of putting it in the dryer. Air-drying can extend the life of the garment and prevent shrinkage and pilling.
